Autism treatment has come a long way since the days of the “Refrigerator Mother” theory which blamed bad parenting for the development of autism in children and offered no meaningful treatments or therapies. What later came to be typically viewed as a purely genetic disorder, also with extremely limited treatment options, is today thought by most to be the result of genetic and other predisposing factors which are triggered by environmental exposures of various types. The good news is that our increased understanding of the factors associated with the development of autism has led to better treatments and therapies for those diagnosed with the disorder. Many parents have reported great progress through treatment of their children, some even losing the autism diagnosis altogether. In this section, we present information from other autism parents on which treatments and therapies have shown the most promise for their children in addition to relevant articles from clinicians and therapists.
